The UCLA LA Tech City Summer Institute is an innovative combination of new technology, design, and spatial analysis realized through a hands-on engagement with the city. Active, project-based learning is emphasized in studios, workshops, seminars, and fieldwork. We focus on three specific technologies (the car, film, and the Internet) to investigate how each technology has contributed to the design and transformation of the global metropolis of Los Angeles. Our goal is to uncover how these technologies have also created social, economic, and cultural divisions within the city and how such problems can be addressed in order to imagine a more equitable and just city.
