PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The UCLA Film & Television Summer Institute gives students from across the country and around the globe an unparalleled opportunity to study filmmaking at one of the most prestigious film schools in the world.

Applicants can select one of the following concentrations:

The UCLA Film & Television Summer Institute shapes the filmmakers of tomorrow right in the heart of Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world.

 

REGISTRATION

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
To apply for one of the Film and Television Summer Institute tracks, you must meet the requirements for the specific track you want to participate. View the eligibility requirements, separated by track, below.

  • Creative Producing
    • Current student at a U.S. college or university
    • College Junior or Senior in Fall 2018 or recent college graduate (class of 2018)
  • Film Production
    • Currently have a high school diploma (or equivalent)
    • Students and aspiring filmmakers 19 years of age or older (as of the first day of the program)
  • Traditional Animation
    • Students and aspiring filmmakers 18 years of age or older as of the first day of the program
  • Stop Motion Animation
    • Students and aspiring filmmakers 18 years of age or older as of the first day of the program

CREATIVE PRODUCING APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Creative Producing track is by instructor consent only. To participate, you must apply and receive acceptance into the program.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete the following:

  • In no more than 200 words: What qualifications do you have that make you a good candidate for a film/TV internship?

Students will be notified within two weeks of an acceptance decision.

This track is only open to current undergraduate students attending a college or university who are rising juniors and seniors. Due to visa restrictions, international students are not eligible.

 

FILM PRODUCTION APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Film Production track is by instructor consent only. To participate, you must apply and receive acceptance into the program.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete the following:

  • In 150 - 300 words: Submit a creative writing piece written in English that uses the words "the trees danced in the wind".
  • A statement of purpose stating why you would like to participate in the program, and what you expect to gain from the experience. 50 - 200 words.

Students will be notified within two weeks of an acceptance decision.

 

TRADITIONAL ANIMATION APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

This track is open to all students and aspiring filmmakers (18 years of age and older), including international students. Students will not be required to apply to this track.

 

STOP MOTION ANIMATION APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

This track is open to all students and aspiring filmmakers (18 years of age and older). Students will not be required to apply to this track.

 

 

HOW TO REGISTER
Registration for the Film and Television Summer Institute can be done conveniently online using the steps below.

  1. Access the Summer Institute Online Registration Form. Read all terms and conditions, then scroll to the bottom and “Continue to Registration”.
  2. Complete the online registration form by answering all mandatory questions
  3. Submit your registration form.
  4. Once your form is submitted, you will be directed to the Retrieve Registration page.

If your track requires consent, allow up to two weeks for the program instructor(s) to review your application. An email will be sent to you with the official decision. If accepted to the program, follow the steps in your acceptance email to make payment of the non-refundable deposit ($150 for domestic students, $400 for international students) and reserve your space in the program.

If your track does not require consent, once your form is submitted, you will be redirected to the retrieve registration page, where you can select “Pay Now” to proceed with payment of the non-refundable deposit . Continue with the payment instructions to reserve your space in the program.

A space in the program is not reserved for you until valid payment of the non-refundable deposit* is completed. Those who are not prepared to pay after program acceptance can submit their registration form and retrieve registration at another time to make payment, however you risk losing a space in the program if the program reaches capacity prior to the ability to pay.

This deposit is not refundable under any circumstances including, but not limited to, drop for non-payment and withdrawal, even if you withdraw from the program before it begins. If you withdraw, this deposit will appear as processing fee charge on your BruinBill account.

If the program is full, you will not be prompted to make payment. When your application is accepted from the wait list, you will be notified by email with instructions for methods of payment.

If registering after May 1, full payment of all fees including the non-refundable deposit but excluding any applicable document and IEI fees is required to reserve your space in the program.

HOW TO MAKE CHANGES TO MY REGISTRATION
Already submitted the online registration form but need to make a change or finish your registration? You can easily do so by retrieving your registration. To retrieve registration, please complete the steps below:

  1. Access the Summer Institute Retrieve Registration Form here.
  2. You will need your five-digit registration number that was sent to your email address. Fill out the form, then “Submit”.

Many changes and additions can be made using retrieve registration including: Payment submission of the non-refundable deposit

  • Uploading required documents
  • Dropping a current program
  • Adding a second program
  • Switching to a new program
