University Studies 1: Ace the UCLA College-to-Career Transition
A New Chapter Awaits: Understanding the post-graduation experience
University Studies 1 is the perfect addition to your summer schedule! It is quite common that the transition from college to life after college can evoke complex emotions. While the undergraduate experience offers significant learning and development opportunities, recent college graduates often express a desire for better preparation as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
University Studies 1 is an online seminar that will provide you with an opportunity to learn from and connect with those who have lived through the college to career transition. The course is cost-free for UCLA students, although it is open to visiting students as well for a fee. Join University Studies faculty, Career Center educators, academic advisors, employers, and UCLA alum to hear more about navigating the College-to-Career Transition with intention. Note: UCLA students should enroll in the SEM 2 version of the course; visiting students should enroll in the SEM 3 version of the course.
Course at a Glance
University Studies 1 is a free 6-week Summer Session course. The objectives of the course are to introduce students to the value of a research institution, its transferable skills, and how they can most effectively maximize their time at UCLA to prepare themselves for the College-to-Career transition. It will give students the opportunity to reflect upon what they have accomplished both inside and outside of the classroom and how they may market the skills and strengths they have cultivated. The course will feature modules highlighting the transferable skills they may acquire through coursework and co-curricular high impact practices; how to foster meaningful relationships with their diverse community of scholars; to demonstrate awareness of career readiness competencies; how to assess their values, skills, interests, and strengths; and how to navigate the College-to-Career transition.

Marian H. Gabra, Ph.D. is the director of Advisor Training & Professional Development & the director of University Studies at UCLA. In her role, she works collaboratively across campus to cultivate spaces of learning and growth for students and staff. As the director of Advisor Training & Professional Development, she provides leadership and oversight to the College Advisor Training Program and has created and implemented the Advising Communities of Excellence (ACE) Professional Development Program, offering interactive workshops and initiatives that bring together campus professionals to explore the relationship between advising theory and practice. ACE has collaborated with campus partners, librarians, the research center, and faculty to foster a culture of advising research and assessment at UCLA. Marian and the ACE Committee have been awarded the 2018 NACADA Region 9 Advising Innovation award. As the director of University Studies, she leads an instructional team in curriculum design and innovative pedagogy, and teaches courses under the program, which aim to support students as they transition to, engage with, and navigate UCLA. She is a published author, has been a featured keynote speaker at various programs and conferences, and currently serves on the NACADA Research Committee. Marian also advises students in the Center for Academic Advising in the College. She earned her BA in English from Occidental College in 2002 and her doctorate in Comparative Literature from UCLA in 2010
