University Studies 10A: Ace UCLA ǀ Critical Strategies to Achieve Undergraduate Excellence (First- and Second-Year Students)
University Studies imparts UCLA students with critical strategies to achieve undergraduate excellence at a top-tier research institution. The curriculum teaches the research university’s mission, rigors, and expectations of students, as well as its pedagogical implications. It cultivates a formal space on campus where UCLA students learn the following: to engage collaboratively with their diverse community of scholars; to comprehend and apply effective learning strategies and theoretical foundations of college student development; to navigate the complex structure of the University; to practice resilience and growth mindset; to think critically about diversity and their identity; and to be fully aware of their value to the intellectual fabric of the institution as contributors to innovative research and scholarship.
As long as a student indicates “yes” to the question “Would you like to enroll in University Studies 10A?”, they will be manually enrolled in one of the following seminars:
Seminar 2 – Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00AM-11:20AM (Location: In-person, Royce 152)
Seminar 3 – Mondays & Wednesdays 1:00PM-2:20PM (Location: In-person, Royce 152)

Writing Requirement Courses
Strong writing skills are essential in any career field. Having strong writing skills promotes creativity, allows you to communicate effectively and connect with people, and enhances your overall credibility as a working professional.
To improve the range and proficiency of undergraduate writing skills, UCLA requires students to satisfy the following writing requirements: Entry Level Writing, Writing I, and Writing II. In these writing courses, students will learn about the basic writing concepts needed for an undergraduate education, critical thinking skills and written communication skills.
Satisfying these requirements will prepare you for success as a UCLA student both during your undergraduate time and beyond. We strongly encourage students to get ahead and consider enrolling in a writing courses as one of the courses in their schedule.
All students entering UC as freshmen must fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement, either by demonstrating proficiency through qualifying test scores, UC-transferable college English composition courses or by following UCLA’s instructions for meeting the Entry Level Writing Requirement. Satisfying this requirement demonstrates readiness for Writing I.
Before Enrolling at UCLA
You can satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement if you:
- Score 30 or better on ACT English Language Arts, or 63 or better on ACT English + Reading.
- Score 680 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT. Please note: The digital SAT Reading and Writing section score has not been approved to meet the ELWR.
- Score 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English (Language or Literature) or Seminar.
- Score of 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement assessment in Research.
- Score 5 or higher on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English (Language A only)
- Score of 6 or higher on a Standard Level Examination in English (Language A only).
- Achieve a passing score on the UC Analytics Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)
After Enrolling at UCLA
If you have not met the ELWR requirement before enrolling at UCLA, you must take the Informed Placement Process (IPP, formerly AWPE) and complete the required UCLA Composition course(s) with a grade of C or better. Students participating in Summer Pathways must take the AWPE on one of the following dates:
- Monday, June 24th, 2024 10:00am-1:00pm
- Monday, July 8th, 2024 10:00am-1:00pm
Please visit the UCLA Writing Programs page for more information regarding costs and registration steps.
Please note from the IPP, students may place into other courses (English Composition 1, English Composition 1A, English Composition 1B, English Composition 1C, or English Composition 2i) that are not being offered during Summer Session 6C. If you place into a writing course that is not offered, you may take your writing course in the Fall instead.
Students who have satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement may move onto the Writing I Requirement. This requirement is informally known as “Freshman Composition”. Per the UCLA Writing programs, you may satisfy this requirement through the following ways:
Before Enrolling at UCLA
You can satisfy the Writing I Requirement if you:
- Score of 4 or 5 on the AP English Language or Literature Exam
- Present transfer credit for an acceptable college level course in English Composition (passed with a C or better) at another institution. This course can be completed after you start your coursework at UCLA.
After Enrolling at UCLA
If you have not met the Writing I requirement before enrolling at UCLA, you must complete English Composition 3 (or its equivalent) with a grade of C or better.
Students who have successfully completed Entry Level Writing and Writing I may consider enrolling in a Writing II course. While Writing I prepares students for college-level academic writing, Writing II introduces you to the ways different disciplines are writing to discover, evaluate, and disseminate new knowledge. You can satisfy the Writing II Requirement by taking any UCLA course with a “W” designation. These courses are offered in many disciplines.
