Thank you for visiting the Jumpstart Summer Institute Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page! Here, you will find answers to questions that students and parents most commonly ask us specifically about this program.

Still have questions? Check out the general Summer Institutes FAQ page or email us at summer@aud.ucla.edu.

Although this is open to all majors, should I have previous knowledge or acquired skills about architecture?

No, previous knowledge is not required. This is an introduction to the architectural design program.

Is this only for those seeking to pursue a career in architecture?

No, it is open to anyone interested in idea-driven design and design thinking.

DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE MY OWN LAPTOP AND MATERIALS FOR THE COURSE?

A complete list of the required hardware, software and drawing materials can be found here. All students will be expected to provide their own technical equipment and materials to participate in the course.

Can I bring past work to be reviewed for my portfolio?

Yes, you are welcome to bring past work to be reviewed during the portfolio workshop, which is part of the fourth week of the program. Feel free to incorporate past experiences as well as work developed as part of the Jumpstart program in the development of your portfolio.
