We are thrilled to have you join us this summer through either SCIP, SCIP+, and eSCIP to help you achieve your academic goals! Our welcoming faculty, diverse students, and beautiful campus all make UCLA one of the best universities in the world and a wonderful place to call your home as a Summer Bruin.

Please see below for important information to review before the summer begins.

Rest assured that our dedicated staff stands ready to assist you with questions; you can reach us at scip@summer.ucla.edu.

All deadlines, unless otherwise stated, are at 5PM Pacific Time.

Before Summer

Registration Portal vs. MyUCLA: To make program registration and enrollment changes (i.e., adding, switching, or dropping programs), you must do so through the Summer Sessions registration portal. Please note you cannot apply to multiple SCIP versions (SCIP, SCIP+, eSCIP).

To access your existing registration, use the five-digit registration number emailed to you upon initial submission of the registration form. If you can’t locate your registration number, please contact us at scip@summer.ucla.edu with your full legal name and date of birth.

MyUCLA is our university’s online student portal where you can:

  • Enroll in an approved SCIP, SCIP+, or eSCIP course; check program page to confirm course options
  • Review your balance and make payments via BruinBill
  • View your final grades and GPA
  • Order academic and/or verification transcripts
  • Update contact information, including your email, mailing address, and phone number

Enrolling in Course(s): Students may enroll in 1-2 Approved SCIP Courses, Approved SCIP+ Courses, or Approved eSCIP Courses depending on their program. The courses cannot conflict with the program’s mandatory Co-Curriculars from 3:30-4:30pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Please see the linked pages and read all relevant information before enrolling via MyUCLA.

Students in SCIP or SCIP+ who require a visa will need to be enrolled in two courses to meet the eligibility for an F-1 visa, required for study.

Enrollment Deadline: Students must select 1-2 Approved Courses by the deadlines below to remain eligible for their program. After the below dates, students will be blocked from making enrollment changes via MyUCLA.

  • May 1: International students who need a visa
  • June 1: Domestic students and eSCIP students.

If a course change is required due to unforeseen circumstances, students must email scip@summer.ucla.edu to request an exception and note they may need to petition.

Waitlists: If the course you wish to take is at capacity, you may add yourself to the waitlist, if available. If a space becomes available, you will be automatically enrolled in the course. It is your responsibility to check your MyUCLA Study List to verify enrollment, and to use BruinBill to pay any outstanding balances.

If you do not receive a space in the course by the first Friday of the course, you will be dropped from the waitlist. You must be enrolled in at least one course to remain in SCIP.

Third Party Access: Per the Participant Agreement, UCLA Summer Sessions may share information on your participation in the program, including, but not limited to, enrollment, performance, disciplinary action, and payment, with all parents/guardians and emergency contacts provided during registration through the last day of the summer term. However, if you wish anyone else to access your information or make payment on your behalf via MyUCLA, you must authorize them third-party access.

To set up access, the third party must create their own separate UCLA Logon and password at https://logon.ucla.edu and share their UCLA Logon with you. You can then log on to MyUCLA and select which MyUCLA features the third party can view or access. Once you grant access, the third party can log on to MyUCLA as if they were a student, but they will only see the functions to which they have been given access. You may revoke access or change access features at any time. For more detailed instructions, watch the MyUCLA Tutorial: Third Party Access.

Payment Information: Summer fees depend on your program type and course unit value. To view the SCIP fees, SCIP+ Fees, or the eSCIP fees, please visit the linked pages. You may also view a fee breakdown and estimation by unit using the Fee Calculator.

Adding an additional course or program may change your summer balance. Please review your BruinBill account on MyUCLA after every enrollment transaction.

The $350 registration fee is required to enroll officially and applies towards your summer balance within 48 hours (do not pay the registration fee twice unless you are enrolling in a separate program or Summer Courses).

Additional summer fees, including the program fee, IEI fee, document fee, and housing fee (if applicable), will be charged via BruinBill after enrollment.

Payment Deadline: June 1 (5PM PDT).

To pay your summer charges, visit MyUCLA under the “Finances and Jobs” tab and select “BruinBill”. Adding or dropping a course(s) may change your summer balance. Please review your BruinBill account on MyUCLA after every enrollment transaction.

Acceptable payment methods online using MyUCLA include:

  • Credit card*
  • Electronic check (e-check)
  • Foreign payment, such as Travelex

*All credit card payments are subject to a 2.75% non-refundable service charge per transaction. This charge is assessed by Higher One, Inc. and may not be refunded under any circumstances. No service fees are applied to e-check payments.

Refund Deadline:

The $350 registration fee is fully non-refundable regardless of when the program or class is dropped.

  • Program fee and residential fee (if applicable) is refundable until June 15
  • Course fees are refundable until June 28 (if impacted) or July 5 (if non-impacted)

If you drop before the refund deadline, any resulting refund credit will be issued back in one of the following ways:

  • Credit Card: Payments made with a credit card will be returned to the credit card that made the original payment.
  • Check Refund: If payment made using a method other than credit card and if not signed up for BruinDirect, refund will be issued as a paper check and mailed to the mailing address on file.

Dropping: If you have not completed the final requirements (e.g., final exam, paper, or project), you can drop the programming part of SCIP through the last day of instruction by emailing scip@summer.ucla.edu and accessing your registration with the five-digit registration number emailed to you upon initial submission of the registration form. If you do not remember your registration number, you may email scip@summer.ucla.edu with your full legal name and date or birth.

Note that dropping SCIP programming does NOT automatically drop you from your classes. If you wish to drop your classes, you must do so via MyUCLA noting the applicable deadlines. You are still financially liable if you remain enrolled in your classes.

The drop deadline for impacted courses is June 28 and the drop deadline for non-impacted courses is July 19. Please note if dropped after the refund deadline(s), you are financially liable.

Roommate Assignment: Students will be assigned roommates based on age and gender and will be notified of the roommate assignment during check-in. In order to better foster a learning community that exposes students to a broader network of peers, we do not accommodate any specific roommate assignment request.

Our residential staff will be planning interactive, optional evening and weekend activities for SCIP and SCIP+ students in housing. These may include ice-breakers, scavenger hunts, movie nights, game nights, arts and crafts, and more! These activities are designed to help students make the most of their time at UCLA and connect with their cohort.

Residential Activities: Outside of the academic program schedule, participants may plan their time and travel on- or off-campus independently or choose to participate in evening or weekend programming activities offered by the residential supervision team so long as they abide by the terms of the Participant Agreement and are back by curfew checks at 11pm. Please see the calendar of SCIP Residential Activities.

Supervision and Curfew:

SCIP and SCIP+ are NOT youth summer camps. Rather, they are intended for highly motivated, mature high school students who are ready for college-level experiences and capable of making their own decisions, as well as accepting the consequences for those decisions.

Participants are expected to manage themselves with a high level of independence and self-sufficiency comparable to full-time UCLA students. While optional evening and weekend activities may be available and curfews will be enforced, only limited supervision will be provided, and the whereabouts of each participant outside of the program’s required activities will not be monitored.

Outside of the program schedule, participants may plan their time and travel on- or off-campus independently or choose to participate in evening or weekend programming activities offered by residential staff so long as they abide by the terms of the Participant Agreement.

Residential Supervision:

A highly skilled team of residential staff will be assigned to residential participants and will reside locally in the residence halls. All residential staff has undergone an extensive background check and training. Their duties include:

  • Enforcing evening curfews (11pm)
  • Coordinating and facilitating optional evening and weekend activities (see Residential Activities section)
  • Responding to incidents and emergencies in a timely manner

In accordance with the Program Participant Agreement, participants must abide by the evening curfew of 11:00 PM, which is to ensure sufficient rest for successful participation in the program’s activities, and must sleep in the assigned room each evening. Curfew violations without prior approval may result in disciplinary actions.

A parent/guardian may use a SCIP Curfew Request Form to request an exception to the evening curfew. Approval will not be granted if forms are incomplete or submitted by someone other than the student’s parent/guardian. After receiving the request, the residential staff will contact the parent/guardian for verification purposes.

Students may be have up to two absences from the program’s required activities due to medical reasons, emergencies, or personal reasons. However, absences may affect successful performance, and full participation in program activities is essential to your success in the program. You do not need to inform staff unless you need to miss more than two co-curriculars. Please contact your instructor directly if you need to miss mandatory class time.

CURFEW REQUESTS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN THE END OF THE FIRST DAY/START DATE OF THE STUDENT’S PROGRAM/COURSE SESSION.

In the weeks leading up to the start of SCIP/SCIP+/eSCIP, we recommend completing everything in our Pre-Arrival Checklist to best guarantee a smooth start to your summer!

During Summer

Attendance for courses, academic programming, co-curricular events, and team-building extracurricular activities, unless otherwise specified, is mandatory. You must participate in and be punctual to all required activities, including, but not limited to, orientations, course lecture and discussion/lab, group meetings, and excursions. No make-up activities will be provided due to the intensive nature of the summer term.

Program faculty and administrators reserve the right to dismiss a participant for repeated tardiness to and/or unauthorized absences from required activities for reasons other than unforeseen emergencies; program fees will not be refundable in the event of dismissal. Parents/guardians should consult the program administrators concerning any foreseeable absence as soon as possible.

Active participation in the Co-Curriculars is a significant part of SCIP and will only enhance what you get out of this unique experience. We highly encourage SCIP students to attend all co-curriculars, however, we understand that events arise that may not allow you to attend every co-curricular. Such events may include an emergency, illness, appointment, etc.

Students are allowed up to two excused absences. If you need to miss a co-curricular, you must submit an absence request form so we have a record of your attendance. Missing more than two co-curriculars may result in dismissal from the program.

Note that the evening and weekend activities offered by residential staff are optional.

If you are participating in Summer Sessions, you are considered a member of the UCLA community regardless of your UCLA matriculation status. You are expected to conduct yourself in a manner that demonstrates True Bruin Values, as well as respect for yourself, your fellow students, faculty, staff, and the learning environment.

You must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by UCLA, including, but not limited to, rules and regulations of the UCLA Office of Summer Sessions and UCLA Student Code of Conduct. You will be expected to meet the highest standards both academically and behaviorally, and will be held fast to a commitment to academic and personal integrity; respect for all members of our Bruin Community and teaching, research, administration, disciplinary procedures, or other University activities; regard for the basic rules of physical safety; and compliance with directions of University or other public officials.

A breach of conduct or the Participant Agreement signed by you and your legal guardian will result in disciplinary action, up to suspension from UCLA Summer Sessions and administrative action against your status in the University. Examples of violations include: academic dishonesty, theft/damage of property, use of offensive language (racial, homophobic, sexist), use of illegal substances and tobacco products, possessions of weapons, and discrimination.

If there is anything you would like to discuss with our staff confidentially, you may contact us at confidential@summer.ucla.edu. Otherwise, you can reach us at info@summer.ucla.edu.

Participants must use campus-approved transportation for all off-campus excursions and events unless otherwise authorized. Participants will not be permitted to use their vehicles during the hours of the program except for personal emergencies. Participants are not allowed to transport other participants without all parents/guardians’ written permission.

After Summer

Courses credit can be offered as either Pass/No Pass (P/NP) or letter grade (A, B, C, etc.). Certain courses offer an optional grading basis which is viewable on your MyUCLA Study List. If your course has an optional grading basis, it allows you to choose between letter grading and Pass/No Pass (P/NP). If this is the case, you may request a change in grading basis via MyUCLA by July 19.

Please note that you may not request a grading basis change if a course stipulates only one grading type. You may visit the UCLA Registrar’s Office website or the Schedule of Classes by searching a subject area, selecting a course of interest, and clicking “Lec” to view the course page for more information on UCLA coursework and grading basis.

A UCLA official academic transcript is a permanent record that reflects all undergraduate and graduate work completed at UCLA. Transcripts can be ordered online through MyUCLA or by mail.

You can order an official transcript once grades are posted ten days after the last day of the session by logging on to MyUCLA, clicking the “Classes” tab, then selecting “Grades and Transcripts.” Please visit the UCLA Registrar’s Office website to learn more about ordering a transcript.

SCIP and eSCIP students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program to signify they have successfully participated in the co-curricular components of SCIP.

UCLA courses are generally accepted for transfer credit at most universities and colleges, but all decisions on transferability rest with the receiving institution (i.e., the high school, university, or college to which you plan to transfer the UCLA credit).

Please get advance approval from the receiving institution before registration if you wish to transfer your UCLA Summer Sessions credit. It is your responsibility to verify whether the credit earned from the program can transfer to your desired institution.

UCLA credit is transferrable to any University of California (UC) campus. UCLA is on the quarter system. As a general guide, a semester unit is worth approximately 1.5 quarter units (e.g., 4 quarter units = 2.5 semester units).
